As I've mentioned before, I'm working on a sequel to Survivalist. I'm still playing with the look and how everything's going to work, and not ready to show a lot of media from it yet. But here's a screenshot I took about a month ago that I kinda liked and felt was worth sharing.

Naturally you'll get a Steam key if you buy it from there, but you also get a DRM-free download.
From now on no-one will be able to release new games - or upload patches - on the platform. In one year's time, September 2017, you won't be able to buy new games either, though what you have already bought will of course keep working.

I say "from now on" no-one will be able to release new games or upload patches, but actually we've been having considerable difficulty doing that for the last few months. Due to a bug in Microsoft's server, every upload has had to be manually 'fixed' by an engineer, and these engineers are usually kept busy with tasks that are higher up on Microsoft's priority list, i.e. XBox One.

Back in June I released a patch for Survivalist, v56. This had some fixes for bugs with the Online Co-op patch, released the previous month. Unfortunately due to the server error and lack of support, v56 only just become available for download on XBLIG last Friday. Here's what's in it:

Fix for crash on XBox when setting Player Limit to less than there are in the current party

Added option to set a 'Greeting' to be shown when people view your game from the 'Join Online Co-op Game' menu

Added option to kick (and ban) players from online co-op games

Fixed buildings being placed in the wrong position by the cheat menu

Fixed clicking Farm on a well not working

Fixed crash when half-built buildings are set on fire

Fixed a couple more reported crashes

Later, in July, when it seemed like nothing was happening with v56, I tried to upload another patch, called v59. It passed peer review but has not been applied on the server and at this point I doubt it ever will be. There are technical issues on those servers that I don't think even Microsoft's engineers understand.

For a list of what would have been in v59, see the news post on Steam. It's really a shame, because I felt like was coming to the end of what I wanted to add to Survivalist anyway, so v59 would have been (almost) the definitive version. Now that will never be available to XBLIG customers.

Anyway in spite of all that I feel some credit is due to the engineers - and their spokesperson Jessica - who have been working on fixing our uploads and just barely holding XBLIG together with bits of string as it stumbles over the finish line, with apparently very little support from Microsoft.

For myself, I'm still somewhat proud of the fact that I got online co-op working
on XBox at all, though I'm afraid it was a bit rushed to meet the deadline and there are some
issues with load times and framerate.

And for XBLIG itself, so long old friend! I started developing Survivalist in August 2009 and for five years I only played it on my XBox 360. In that time XBLIG went from promising new experiment to abandoned failure, in Microsoft's eyes, but I kept working on it. What an insane thing to do, in retrospect..! In the end Survivalist was never a runaway success on XBox 360 but nor did it sink without a trace, and it got me enough fans and support to help me to pass Greenlight and release on Steam, which in fact has really changed my life. I'm currently working on a sequel.

So yeah, XBLIG. So long. Farewell. Goodbye. Good riddance. Rest in Peace. Go home, you're drunk. Exit, pursued by a zombie.bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10034337748122739345noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6723405052156510779.post-25760657410035655932016-04-16T09:24:00.001-07:002016-04-16T09:25:29.620-07:00Online co-op is live on Steam! After many months of work I've finally made the online co-op patch live on the main branch on Steam! You can read about it there. It's currently also making it's way through the XBLIG peer review process so hopefully it'll be available on XBox 360 soon as well.

Here's the changelist, which also includes a few wishlist items people have mentioned to me and fixes for bugs that have been reported:

Added Online Co-op

Added Log Screen (F5)

Changed savegame interface to support more than 8 savegames

Added AI for characters following someone who is gathering supplies, or getting water from a well, to do the same

Added ability to import translations from TSV files

Added Alternate Action shortcut (middle mouse button) to inventory controls for things like Eat, Drink, etc

Fixed raiders bodies getting deleted immediately after they die

Fixed issue where characters in your community would dislike you for threatening looters

Fixed bug where 'There's too many of them out there' awardment was not awarded if you abandoned then re-occupied your bunker.

Fixed footstep sound not playing sometimes

This includes:

- Spanish!
- Four new music tracks from Sounds of Circumstance
- The option to repair damaged buildings, or take over vacant ones (To use this, equip Toolbox and target the desired building).
- A bunch of minor bug fixes.

We also got some rather sad news from Microsoft - they are sunsetting XBLIG. But at least they're giving everyone plenty of advance warning about it. We will continue to be able to publish games, and release patches, until September 2016. And you'll continue being able to buy them until September 2017. After that you'll still be able to play the ones you've bought, but you won't be able to buy new ones.

So I'm still aiming to get online co-op into the XBox version before it sunsets. Once I've got it working on Steam it shouldn't be too hard to port it over.bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10034337748122739345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6723405052156510779.post-82785217828292873362015-09-06T10:15:00.000-07:002015-09-06T10:16:25.791-07:00What I'm currently up toA couple of months ago it occurred to me that I hadn't updated this blog in a while. The reason for that is I've been updating people on the project via Steam news posts as I think they get read by more people.

Of course, people who own the game on XBox 360 likely won't be reading about it on Steam and might be wondering what's going on. The answer is that I released a new patch back in June, but it hasn't made it to XBLIG yet. I figured I'd update this blog once it had. In fact I've been trying for the last month or so to get it on XBLIG, but the service seems to have run into some problems that make it impossible for people to update games on it, or indeed add new ones. Microsoft has been working on this, and we thought it was fixed recently, but now it's started happening again and my patch still hasn't made it through peer review.

So in summary, the patch is coming to XBLIG, it's just taking a long time.

In the meantime, I've also added an FAQ on the Steam forums about what I'm working on next. Short answer: Online Co-op. (Which I also hope to bring to XBox 360 once I've got it working on Steam.) After that I'll start on a sequel.bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10034337748122739345noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6723405052156510779.post-49649158553544667732015-02-20T17:26:00.000-08:002015-02-20T17:26:04.092-08:00Survivalist is One Year Old!A year ago today I unleashed Survivalist on an unsuspecting world! Well, the 20th of February is the date it launched on XBox Live Indie Games. I hadn't done any kind of pre-launch publicity (which was stupid of me really, but I was too busy making the game), so no one was expecting it and I had very little idea what to expect. Would people 'get' it? Would it be seen as just another zombie game? Would anyone notice it existed? Thankfully it was generally well-received, although there were some launch issues to contend with.

Three weeks ago it launched on Steam, and in that short time it has sold approximately as many copies as it did in a year of being on XBLIG :) All hail the mighty Gaben! Still, I owe a lot to the XBLIG platform - every time I read about it seems like someone's saying something negative about it, but it actually put my game in front of a lot of players and gave me a "long tail" of sales even after I slipped off the new releases list. Many of the people that bought Survivalist on XBLIG went on to vote for it and write positive comments on the Steam Greenlight page, which I'm sure was a massive help getting onto Steam. Yet XBLIG itself is a completely open platform with no gatekeepers - you just have to pass peer review from other developers (which is more just a useful way to get feedback and testing rather than a barrier to entry).

So yeah, happy birthday Survivalist - and I hope XBLIG carries on long enough for me to be able to release some kind of a sequel on it.
This week I released two patches for the PC version, v28 and v29. They don't add any exciting new features, they just fix a few bugs and sources of confusion that got discovered by all the new players. If you're one of those players then thanks for reporting them! But I hope you don't find any more!

Here's the change log:

Added quest arrows to point to the next regional threat, if you are at war, when you select a Complete The Game quest.

Fixed 'Sarah Slaughter has an easy quest for you' mission not going away if you chose 'au naturel'.

Fixed being able to activate cheat mode before you were supposed to.

Fixed being able to get Jim Gallager to join you before Cassie is dead.

Fixed being able to trade negative items and get free stuff if you are over-encumbered.

Fixed being able to transfer items to you inventory by dragging them across in the 'Bring Supplies Home' inventory page.

Fixed fire and zombie sounds not being affected by the effects volume slider.

Fixed game crashing on startup on PCs using the Turkish language.

That aside, the Steam launch has gone pretty well, with lots of positive comments and good reviews. Awardments system), and a bunch of small fixes and improvements. For
example you'll now be able to walk over crops instead of being blocked
by them :) And the PC controls will default to the WASD configuration,
which seems to be way more popular than arrow keys - you can still set
it to the arrow keys with one click in the Controls menu if you want
though.bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10034337748122739345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6723405052156510779.post-23673111510578490852014-12-31T15:27:00.002-08:002014-12-31T15:29:04.633-08:00Happy New Year!Survivalist has made a couple of people's year-end best-of lists:
Many, many thanks to all the people that voted. Special shout-out to people who'd played the game on XBLIG, Desura or IndieGameStand and came to write positive comments about it on the Steam page.

So what's next? I'm hoping I'll be able to get it out out Steam pretty quickly - within the next month would be my goal. I'll need to integrate Steam Achievements with the Awardments system I just added, and I guess there might be a few other Steamworks features worth taking advantage of.

I also still have my to-do list of bugs and suggested improvements to work on - although I'm hoping to come to the end of it soon, or at least draw a line under it. One thing I may add is an alternate set of default controls based around the WASD keys instead of the arrows - and a screen the first time you play it asking you which scheme you'd prefer - as it seemed that hard-to-reach keys was a fairly common criticism of the PC version. If you have a preferred key layout, please post it in this thread by the way. My guess is that most hardcore PC gamers probably prefer WASD, but I'm reluctant to just make it the default outright because, well, the arrow keys have arrows on them...

Meanwhile, on the XBox 360 the latest patch has passed peer review! This means the changes from v23, v24 and v25 are now on XBLIG: that includes the Pause/Fast-Forward modes, the ability to craft Bandages from Cheap Vodka and Rags, Concrete Watchtowers, Awardments and the Cheat Menu being unlocked if you complete the game. Plus there's this:

Yep, I'm doing a sale on the XBox 360! Over the Christmas period Survivalist for XBLIG will be sold at the lowest price point - that's $1.00 in the US, or 69p in the UK. The idea behind this was supposed to be to promote the Steam Greenlight, but now I don't need to - woohoo! However I figure since the PC people have had their various bundles it's time the XBox 360 folks had a turn. The plan is to return to the $2.99 XBLIG price point sometime in January - so get it cheap while you can!bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10034337748122739345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6723405052156510779.post-27727779332870723892014-11-26T15:59:00.002-08:002014-11-28T14:15:03.728-08:00I've added "Awardments" and Cheats - and there's a Pay What You Want Deal for the next 4 days!

Survivalist will soon be available as a Pay What You Want deal on IndieGameStand.com,
with 10% of proceeds going to Scope, the disability charity. This only
lasts from the 27th to the 30th of November, so don't miss it!

IndieGameStand have a feature on these deals called Beat The Average.
You can choose what price you pay for the game, but if you pick a
higher price than the average so far you get a bonus item. For
Survivalist, I decided to add a Cheat Mode to the game. This Cheat Mode
is available to anyone who completes the game, but you can unlock it early
if you Beat the Average on the PWYW deal. The idea behind it is to
enable players to have some silly fun with the game's engine. For
example you can:

Customize the appearance (clothing, skin tone, face shape, gender, etc) of any character in the game

Spawn weapons, buildings and enemies

Max out your skills and go on a rampage!

View the entire map without the fog of war

Having added a cheat mode, I wanted to give people a reason not
to cheat so I've introduced Awardments - aka the non-copyright
infringing version of Achievements. If you use cheats, the game will
remember it (and will mark your savegame accordingly) and prevent you
from unlocking Awardments in that game. So you could give yourself an
RPG and blast through everything to complete the game - but you won't
get any Awardments from that playthrough.

(However, you can change your appearance without disabling
awardments, as that has no effect on gameplay - except for your gender,
which does affect a few things).

And of course, if the game gets on Steam the Awardments will be implemented as Steam Achievements.

Here's the Awardments screen in the menus:

I'm also trying out a new price point on PC of $4.99 US, as I often
get comments saying it's worth more than $2.99, or that it's such a good
deal at that price. And I think some people might assume there's less
to the game than there really is, with the price being so low compared
to other PC indie games. But if you don't want to pay so much, check
out that Pay What You Want deal!

I'll aim to bring this patch (but not the price change) to the XBox 360 version in the next few weeks.

I had to release this a bit earlier than I was expecting as few new bugs were discovered that I wanted to squish.

One of the bits of feedback I've gotten is people often find they don't have enough bandages, whereas something I've found personally is I always end up with more molotov cocktails than I know what to do with. So in this patch I've done two things:

Made it possible to use cloths by themselves as low quality bandages

Made it possible to craft "proper" bandages from a cloth and a bottle of cheap vodka as an alternative to molotov cocktails:

Okay so it's not the most in-depth crafting system in the world, and it's not exactly original *cough* *cough* but it helps balance the game.

Another thing I've done is tried to improve Follow commands a bit.
There was often a situation where you'd want some community members to
help you fight off an attack or something, but they were in a building
and there was no easy way to get them to follow you - you can now do
that with the Alternate Action button.

And when you had a large group it was sometimes quite hard to tell who was following you and who wasn't, so I've made it so that small arrows appear over your followers heads, and you see grey circles showing their health, for a short time after you switch characters or tell someone to follow you.

Here's the full list of changes:

ADDED

Concrete Watchtowers for builders with Construction Skill level 5

a warning message if you transfer items to a zombie corpse that could get despawned

ability to tell community members in buildings to follow you with Alternate Action button

ability to use cloths as low-quality bandages, and to craft bandages from cloth+vodka

some hud elements to try and make it easier to tell who is following you

FIXED

AI to make characters on supply runs restock with water etc at the base instead of just anywhere

bug where characters got teleported if you placed a building on top of their own location

bug where guards would not try to find more ammo if they ran out, and would instead try to melee-attack enemies

bug where, if you enclose an area with a fence, zombies could still appear inside it

exploit where characters could drink from wells that were under construction

exploit where you could get more construction materials by demolishing unbuilt buildings

These changes will of course make their way to the XBox 360 version but it might take a while.bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10034337748122739345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6723405052156510779.post-15769567501487510862014-10-20T17:03:00.000-07:002014-10-20T17:07:57.514-07:00Survivalist is now available on IndieGameStandYep, Survivalist can now be bought via IndieGameStand as well as Desura.

I thought I'd give a brief update on what I'm currently working on. I've said a few times that I'm not going to make any major changes, but I will fix bugs and address usability issues, and add some minor features that have been requested. The bug reports seem to have died down recently, which gives me the chance to focus on some of the other stuff.

One thing that was quite often requested was the ability to pause and fast-forward the game. Pausing is useful in combat if you need to manage several different characters or groups of characters, whereas fast-forwarding is useful if you find yourself without anyone to fight and just want some people to get to their destinations quicker. With a gamepad, I'm making it so you press the d-pad down to pause, and up to fast-forward.

Secondly, I'm adding a new building - the Concrete WatchTower! Basically it's the same as the watchtower, but stronger and immune to molotov cocktails. This is available for characters with level 5 in the Construction skill. Basically, I've always felt that I never really gave the player anything exciting at level 5 Construction, and that always bugged me, so I figured this would do the job as it's always annoying when looters burn down your wooden watchtowers.bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10034337748122739345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6723405052156510779.post-2149028043964051822014-10-08T16:02:00.000-07:002014-10-08T16:05:12.478-07:00Patch & InterviewI got interviewed at the Wonderland Games Blog, which belongs to a guy who used to write for the now defunct indiegraph.com review site (and who also makes zombie games!).

And patch v21 has finally made it through the XBLIG review process, so that's now live on the XBox 360. This patch was released on Desura a couple of weeks ago and, besides fixing some glitches, contains the much-needed, often-requested ability to sort your inventory:

On a gamepad you use the d-pad left and right to choose what to sort by, and up and down to choose the order. You can sort by: Time Added (the default), Individual Weight, Total Weight, Individual Price (depicted above), Total Price, and Type.

The windows version, in the meantime, is now on v22.bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10034337748122739345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6723405052156510779.post-86299801663618029972014-09-27T10:22:00.001-07:002014-09-27T10:22:49.811-07:00Steam GreenlightI'm submitting Survivalist to Steam Greenlight! This was to fix a crash if Windows Media Player was not installed, and a few other bits and pieces.

I've also submitted this build to the XBLIG peer review process, so once it's passed that means owners of the XBox 360 version of the game will get the benefit of many of the small improvements and fixes I've made while developing the PC version:

Nicer UI sounds, plus new sounds for gate opening, equiping weapons and more

Independant volume control for music, UI and game sounds

Prettier menus:

Fix for accidentally triggering a war with looters during fisticuffs

Molotov cocktail creation amount dialog

Various other small fixes

In future, I hope to release patches for both XBox 360 and PC alongside each other.bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10034337748122739345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6723405052156510779.post-23363575666854154522014-09-03T15:09:00.000-07:002014-09-03T15:09:27.646-07:00Survivalist will be available on PC this weekend! The PC version of Survivalist is going to be coming out on Desura this Saturday, the 6th of September - at 11.00 pm Pacific Time!bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10034337748122739345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6723405052156510779.post-3220379393707580182014-08-16T08:32:00.001-07:002014-08-16T08:34:06.749-07:00Trailer!I've finally made a trailer! This is using the PC version of the game and is recorded at 1080p. First time I've ever attempted any video editing. Obviously there's no voice-over but when you watch it please try to imagine that the title captions are said in the standard "In a world..." trailer voice-over guy voice.

The PC version seems pretty close to being ready for release. The number, and seriousness, of bugs I find each time I play it has gone way down :)
You can read it here.

I also said in the interview that I'm working on a Windows port, so I thought I'd upload a screenshot of that. It will support a gamepad but for people who don't have one I'm making it so the mouse rotates the camera and left and right clicking are the main interaction buttons. At least that's the default - the plan is to have a key configuration menu so you set it up how you like. There's also a screen resolution menu - this screenshot was taken at 1080p (EDIT - although Blogspot seems to scale it down to 900):
All of this doesn't mean I've stopped working on the XBox 360 version - I'll be adding minor new features for the Windows version which will make it back to the XBox. Including 1080p if the XBox can handle it (haven't tried it yet!). However it might be a while before the next patch as the code's in a bit of a state at the moment. bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10034337748122739345noreply@blogger.com0
